Does a member of staff need to come to the session?

For counselling, no these sessions are completely confidential. For speech and language therapy we highly recommend a staff member attends

To get the most out of your speech and language therapy sessions, we highly recommend a member of staff attends with the child, particularly if they will be supporting the child to do the follow up work outside of the session. This means that not only will the member of staff be better able to support the pupil, they will also be being up-skilled to support other pupils with speech, language and communication needs. For some pupils, especially those aged 14+, they may prefer to attend the session alone, and that is absolutely fine, in agreement with their speech and language therapist.

A member of staff should not attend counselling sessions with the pupil, as these sessions are completely confidential. The pupil should have these sessions in a quiet space where they cannot be overheard.
