Does my child need to have an assessment?
Assessments are essential to get a baseline of your child's current speech, language and communication needs.
In most cases we recommend an assessment. The assessment supports the therapist to plan suitable interventions for the child, and, as part of the assessment, a full speech and language therapy report is written.
This report can be useful for yourself and your child’s school as it provides the assessment results, as well as strategies to support your child.
In some cases, we don’t need a full assessment, for example if you have one from within the last 6 months which the therapist feels contains enough information or if your child is very young. Your therapist will advise you if an assessment is needed in the initial consultation session.
