Let's get your mic ready for action!

Headset With Microphone

If your headset is one of the following types, this means it has a microphone:

  • If you look at the metal part of the headphone plug it should have three lines / rings that go around the plug ( sometimes different coloured rings ). If your headphone plug has more than 2 lines, this means that it does have a microphone.
  • It has a Double Headphone Jack plug ( it has 2 plugs, one for a microphone, one for sound output ).
  • It has a USB connection. 

Built-In Computer Microphone

  • Some computers will have a microphone built into the computer. This does not require any setup but can cause an echoing sound in your Mable session if using your computer speakers and not headphones.
  • If you are unsure if your computer has a microphone built-in, it will sometimes have some small holes with a picture of a microphone next to it or be built into your computer's webcam ( if it has a webcam ). 

Webcam Microphone

If your computer has a built-in webcam, it will often also have a microphone.
If you have an external webcam ( one that you plug into your computer ), this will also often have a microphone built-in.

IPad Microphone

If you are using an IPad you don't need to select a microphone in Mable, it will use the default microphone on your device. If you are using a headset all you need to do is plug it into your device ( please make sure this is a headset, not headphones that don't have a microphone. If you're unsure, read the Headset With Microphone section at the top of this article). If you are not using a headset, the microphone that is built into your IPad will be used.

Testing your Microphone

In the technology test, or device settings window in your session, you will have a microphone icon next to the microphone device list, as shown below. When you talk into your microphone, the volume indicator should fill purple showing your microphone is picking up sound.

If the indicator isn't moving, try selecting another microphone from any available microphone options.
