Tech Test Microphone Issues

The first thing to try if you're having any microphone issues is restarting your browser - this will solve most problems.

The first thing to try if you're having any microphone issues is restarting Google Chrome or Safari. If you are using on a laptop or Apple Mac, please click here and follow our guide on Force Quitting Google Chrome. If you are using an IPad, or another tablet, please make sure you fully close the browser app you are using before re-opening.

Input Level Indicator Not Moving

Within the technology test you will have a microphone icon with a input volume indicator below it, as shown below. When you talk into the microphone, the indicator should start to fill with a purple colour.

If the volume indicator is not moving when you speak into your microphone, try selecting another microphone from the device list ( if there is any other's available to you ).

It is also possible that the selected microphone has been muted, or your audio input volume has been turned down on your device. If you are unsure how to unmute your microphone, click here and follow our guide on unmuting your microphone.

Correct Microphone Not In Device List

If your microphone is not displayed in the device list, this could mean your microphone has not been plugged in correctly, or your device is not working. If you have checked the device is plugged in correctly, you may want to try using the microphone device on another device if possible. Also check that the device is available to your computer. You can do this by visiting the settings on your device, and check the microphone appears in the list of audio input devices. Click here if you're unsure how to find your audio device settings.

Microphone Echo

If you select a different device for your microphone and sound / audio output, this can cause echo in your session. This can also happen if your microphone picks up the sound coming out of your device. To try and avoid echo, you can do the following:

- Select the same device for both your microphone and sound / audio output.

- Turn the volume down a bit on your computer or tablet, to stop your microphone from picking up any sound from your device.

- Try using headphones and selecting them as your sound / audio output device ( if you are on an IPad, headphones will be automatically selected once they have been connected ).
